GALS: Transforming Lives and Restoring Harmony in Kayonza

In the heart of Rwanda’s Kayonza District, where familial strife once cast a shadow over daily life, a transformative initiative has emerged, bringing hope and harmony to hundreds of households. The Gender Action Learning System (GALS), introduced through the KIIWP project supported by IFAD and Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, is making a profound impact on communities long plagued by internal discord.

GALS isn’t just a program; it’s a comprehensive approach to social and economic development rooted in gender equality and mutual respect. Through structured group sessions, over 6,000 families across 240 groups have been equipped with invaluable skills in economic management, gender dynamics, and interpersonal relationships. These sessions have not only provided practical knowledge but have fostered a sense of solidarity among participants, empowering them to tackle longstanding issues together.

One such family, Nyirahabineza Odette and her husband Pascal Ntirimeninda from Gahini Sector, exemplify the transformative power of GALS. Formerly marred by conflict, their relationship underwent a profound shift after participating in the program. Odette recounts how GALS teachings enabled them to communicate effectively, pool resources, and envision a shared future. They have since invested in agricultural land and improved their farming practices, turning idle efforts into purposeful ventures.

“For 18 years, we farmed without direction,” Pascal reflects. “GALS showed us how to dream and plan for our future together.”

Beyond economic gains, GALS has been instrumental in repairing fractured relationships. Pascal admits that despite appearances, their home was once a place of tension. “GALS taught me to appreciate my family more,” he acknowledges. “It gave me tools to understand my role and contribute positively at home.”

The impact extends beyond individual families. John Bosco Nyemazi, Mayor of Kayonza District, attests to the program’s broader societal benefits. “GALS has significantly reduced domestic conflicts,” he announces proudly. Collaborating with local institutions and community leaders, the initiative has not only addressed immediate issues but has sparked a cultural shift towards greater harmony and understanding.

Looking forward, Mayor Nyemazi shares ambitious goals for Kayonza District. “Our aim is for 600 families annually to transition from conflict to cohesion,” he states. With 890 families already assisted in 2023 alone, the momentum is building towards a more peaceful community where every household can thrive.

As Rwanda continues on its path of post-conflict recovery and development, initiatives like GALS stand as beacons of hope and progress. By equipping families with practical skills and fostering a supportive community environment, GALS not only heals wounds but lays the foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.

In the words of Nyirahabineza Odette, now a beacon of change in her own right, “GALS took us out of hidden conflicts and showed us a path to love and prosperity.”

Indeed, in Kayonza, the transformative ripple effects of GALS are testament to the enduring power of education, collaboration, and hope.
